Over the last few months we have had some computers that refuse to allow an install of internet explorer version 8. I hear some of you asking why bother, but unfortunately there are scads of boneheaded developers out there who just must incorporate every new whistle as soon as possible. Never mind waiting till its fully tested.
The symptom is that it calls for an update that fails with a message that your computer does not need this update. The conflict is because service pack three already has this patch. Trouble is its a different version to the one that IE8 requires.
If you find you are affected with this problem, the easiest way I have found to fix it so far is to reinstall SP3 and let the computer do all the updates from the net. This should result in IE8 working properly.
Now you have done that, you can get back to your decent browser, Firefox.
