Sink or Swim in the Malware Age

Sink or Swim in the Malware Age.

Perhaps the scariest part of owning a computer and connecting it to the internet, is the constant threat of getting infected with virus or malware programs. Many computer users have little idea of what virus or malware is or how it affects their computer.

Both virus and malware are potentially harmful programs but have different delivery (the way they get on your computer) and symptoms. They can pose a serious security threat with the potential for loss of money, potential of costly court cases or identity theft. The scope of this article does not deal with detailed information on the threat issue but highlights the need to know how to safely use your computer on the internet.

A virus program generally is spread by removable disks, including USB drives, unsecured internet connection or via email. Successful infection relies on slack or non existent security or procedures on the target computer. Virus normally are spread without any indication to the user.

Malware has become a larger issue and often includes any program that would be seen as undesirable. Sometimes a malware program will fulfil a useful function, but has unwanted side effects or will install other unwanted programs. Malware can be spread in many ways including the same ways viruses are spread, but more often they are actually installed by unwitting users. This is the area users can avoid troubles with a little knowledge. (more…)

Village Festival

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

We just had the Village Festival at nearby Yeppoon. I was helping out on the gate and did manage to get a little time to wander around. meet friends and check out the entertainment at the Coowonga stage area. I won’t repeat what I wrote for the Coowonga site as you can head off there and read that story. www.coowongafolkclub.com

It was a huge event that ran over the entire weekend. There were two stages with non stop music. Lots of interesting stalls, food and novelties. During the day there were many craft and art workshops that provided something for everyone. You could even dabble and try your hand at an oil painting. Entry fees covered all the materials used in the workshops and you were able to take your masterpiece home to hang in pride of position.

Local artist Noel went all out with heavy duty art with his Hebel block carving workshop. There was tie dying and many others that I did not fully investigate. One artist had a sand casting workshop with interested people making sand moulds for a cast aluminium alloy creation. I recently cast a number 31 at one of his workshops.

Many local and interstate musicians thrilled audiences with their performances. Pugsly Buzzard entertained in his very distinctive style. Melbourne trio isĀ  “Rosie Burgess Set” sang and played up a storm and then Denis Harris and friends did not want to stop when they got started. Mr Percival looped and had a full house marvelling at his vocal skills. The unique combination of beat boxing and digital loopind tracks made a great show. Other artists I missed but heard on the grape vine were excellent.

It was a long day for me but I can seriously recommend that you mark your calendar for next year. You won’t be disappointed.

Upgrade of site software

Sunday, August 9th, 2009

Its been a few days since the look and feel of the VTE site was fairly stuffed up by a site software upgrade. I finally had a moment to fix it up and in the process learned a bit as well. Most important message though is to make sure you have backups before you tinker.

About the only thing I had not backed up was my modified site theme and this was what was trashed in the upgrade. Now I have set it up as a separate custom theme that should not get messed up next upgrade. Now all I need to do is remember to make the theme separate on other sites before i upgrade.

Cheers, Rob.
